About Sahitya Chora

‘Sahitya Chora’ of B. H. College is a common platform for literary activities among the students of B. H. College, Howly. Born on 29th of September,1986, the society has already crossed three decades. The first committee was formed to run the activities of Sahitya Chora where Prof. Rabindra Bhattacharyya, Department of English was the President and Dhruba Kr. Talukdar, a student of Assamese Department was the Secretary. The main purpose of the society was to develop the literary talent of the students. Various measures were taken to achieve the goal.
Objectives of the ‘Sahitya Chora’:
1. To promote literary awareness among students,
2. To hold academic meeting to discuss the current developments of literature,
3. To organize literary programmes like poets meet, literary conference, seminar, literary lecture, publishing magazine, books etc.
Activities :
In order to inspire the students, an initial attempt was made to start ‘Ajir Sahitya’, a daily literary column for the students. A specific board was arranged for the purpose. The students contributed poems, articles etc. every day before 8 AM and the EDITORIAL BOARD after scrutinizing those writings had published the best ones for that day alone at 9 AM before the class started. This was a daily routine and a common platform for daily publication which had received far and wide popularity and continued for about one year without any break. But owing to political unrest in Assam the modus operandi came to a standstill. The idea behind this daily publication was of Prof. R. Bhattacharyya.
Publication of annual magazine :
In 1997, the first magazine was published under the initiative of Dr. Bishnu Charan Das, Professor, Department of English and Pranabjyoti Bhuyan, Secretary, Sahitya Chora. In 2007-2008, it was decided to publish articles in English, Bengali, Sanskrit, Hindi, Arabic, Bodo besides Assamese and the magazine was named ‘Satsari’. Prof. R. Bhattacharyya and Prof. Phulkumari Kalita played a special role behind the name ‘Satsari’. Since then the ‘Satsari’ has been publishing annually.
Since the inception of the ‘Sahitya Chora’, publication of wall magazine, poets meet, literary conference, seminar, literary lecture etc. have kept the ‘Sahitya Chora’ grazing dynamic.
